About

CRUK Relay For Life Eastbourne is returning to Eastbourne for the third consecutive year.  In our first three years we have raised nearly £100,000 to fund the important work of Cancer Research UK in its fight against CANCER.  In 2018 our community will successfully unite again to raise funds throughout the year.

Relay For Life is a global event and raises most funds for Cancer Research in the world.  It now runs in over 24 countries.  Over a million pounds is spent annually locally at Cancer Research’s UKs research unit at Brighton University.  Relay For Life is about hope and gives people an opportunity to do something tangible to help find a cure and better treatments.

We will celebrate in a fantastic 24-hour event held on the 2nd and 3rd June 2018 at Eastbourne Sports Park, Cross Levels Way, Eastbourne BN21 2UF.  The event will be filled with various community stalls and activities.  It will be a fantastic family fun day and mini music festival; showcasing the amazing local talent from Eastbourne and surrounding areas.

During the 24 hours teams of people (no minimum or maximum) take it in turns to walk round the track. One member of each team walks (or uses aids) around the track throughout the event, signifying the fact that Cancer never sleeps!  Not every member has to walk around the track, so if you cannot make it on the day, or are unable to walk that far, you can still be a member of the team and help them with fundraising, whether its baking cakes, or holding quizzes or raffles, it all helps.

Highlights of the event include the Opening and Closing Ceremonies together with the wonderful Cancer Survivors’ Lap of Honour.  The Survivors Lap of Honour is the Relay’s first lap of the track with all the participating cancer survivors walking round, together with their carer and/or families. We know then that the Relay is truly under way.

The incredibly moving Candle of Hope Ceremony is held after dusk ensuring that Relay is “One Night You Will Never Forget . . .”.

After dark, we honour people who have been touched by cancer. Candles of Hope bags can be dedicated to anyone who has had a cancer diagnosis, whether alive or passed away.

This is a time that truly highlights the importance of defeating this disease.

The bags that have been decorated previously will then be placed around the track and lit as darkness falls.
